Lidl to open 5 new supermarkets following €30M investment

German supermarket giant, Lidl, continues with its growth strategy in Spain and plans to open five new establishments this February 2021 following a c. €30 million investment. The new supermarkets are to be located in Madrid, Barcelona, the Balearic Islands, and the Canary Islands.

The first of the five retail properties was opened to the public on the 4th of February 2021 in Barcelona’s district of Ciutat Vella with a GLA of c. 1,000 sqm creating 23 new jobs.

Madrid will see two the opening of two additional Lidl stores this month with the suburb of Rivas Vaciamadrid hosting the next opening of the chain, on February 18th 2021. In this case, the Lidl store has a GLA of over 1,500 sqm and 160 parking slots creating jobs for 39 people. The second opening will happen on February 25th in Madrid’s city centre, on Calle Soria, nº 2, next to the Ronda de Toledo. This establishment has c. 1,200 sqm of GLA and employs 30 people.

Towards the end of the month, another two Lidl supermarkets will open in the Balearic and Canary Islands. A new Lidl supermarket with a surface area of c. 1,000 square meters will be inaugurated at nº 42 of Calle Aragón in Palma de Mallorca, where 25 people will work. Finally, the new Lidl store in the Canary Islands is located on Hermanos Domínguez Santana street, in Tamaraceite (Las Palmas de Gran Canaria). This supermarket will have an area of c. 1,400 sqm and will employ 24 people.

Since Lidl entered Spain in 1994 with the slogan «Lidl, best price and quality», the chain has exceeded expectations and opened its 600th store in last February 2020 investing over 1.2 billion in the Spanish market since 2016.
